Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum
Si vis pacem, para bellum is a Latin adage translated as “If you want peace, prepare for war”. It is also the motto of the British Krav Maga Association (BKMA) under which I am licensed to instruct authentic Krav Maga.
I love this adage because it aligns so well with the modern philosophy of Krav Maga.
Although it originates from a different era, its peace through strength message has resonated down the ages and describes perfectly why people train in Krav Maga.
The more prepared or able you are to fight for what you hold dear, the less likely you will be attacked for fear of what you might do to your opponent and therefore. the more likely there will be no fight at all. Or, if there is conflict, the more prepared you are to deal with it, the better an outcome you will have.
So, if you want peace, prepare for war – Si vis pacem, para bellum. If you want to be able to protect yourself and your family from violent attack I recommend you learn Krav Maga with a BKMA Licensed Instructor.
Here are some other quotes and adages that share a similar message that could equally apply to Krav Maga training:

“Never give in – never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” – Winston Churchill
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle
“Walk softly and carry a big stick.” – Theodore Roosevelt
“The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.” – Irwin Rommel
